Journey with John Bytheway, Dr. Rick Nielsen (AKA Ranger) and Bountiful Travel on an African Safari. Enjoy time in Kenya visiting an elephant orphanage, the Nairobi temple and shopping. Visit a game reserve and see all of the amazing animals. Visit Lake Naivasha to see the hippos. Visit Lake Nakuru National Park and enjoy the wildlife. Travel by train to Mombasa and relax on the beach and see the 16th century city sights. We participate in a project to help the locals in Kenya. John and Rick will share insights as you explore Africa with our adventurous LDS group.

Day 1 : Fly to Nairobi, Kenya

Fly from your home to Nairobi, Kenya.

Day 2 : Nairobi, Kenya

July 6, 2027 (Tuesday)

Arrive in Nairobi at the Jomo Knyatta International Airport where you are met and transferred to our hotel. (D)

Day 3 : Masai Mara Game Reserve

July 7, 2027 (Wednesday)

This morning we pack our bags and head to the Masai Mara Game Reserve. It is quite a trek, but we are there in time for lunch. After lunch we head out on afternoon game drive. We spend the evening relaxing at our accommodations. (B,L,D)

Day 4 : Masai Mara Game Reserve

July 8, 2027 (Thursday)

Today is filled with more game drive adventures. We have both a morning and an afternoon drive. Those who are interested may pay an additional fee and get up early for a hot air balloon ride which shows you the animals from above. We visit the Masai Village for a unique cultural experience. Day 5 : Lake Naivasha

July 9, 2027 (Friday)

All too soon it is time to leave the game reserve behind. We load up our bags and drive to lake Naivasha. Here we take a short boat ride to see the hippos. We visit Crescent Island and get to walk with the wild animals. We overnight near Lake Naivasha. (B,L,D)

Day 6 : Lake Naivasha/Lake Nakuru

July 10, 2027 (Saturday)

We spend the morning at Lake Naivasha before heading to Lake Nakuru National Park. The scenery is stunning and the animals abound. We overnight in Nairobi. (B,L,D)

Day 7 : Nairobi, Kenya

July 11, 2027 (Sunday)

Today we visit the Nairobi, Kenya Temple. We plan to meet with a member of the temple presidency. Our afternoon is spent on a service project in Nairobi. We get to know some of the local people as we help. Overnight in Nairobi. (B,L,D)

Day 8 : Mombasa, Africa

July 12, 2027 (Monday)

Today we board a train to Mombasa. We have the afternoon and evening to enjoy our surroundings. We admire the vibrant, narrow streets of Mombasa and the captivating architecture. We overnight in Mombasa. (B,L,D)

Day 9 : Mombasa, Africa

July 13, 2027 (Tuesday)

Mombasa is ours for the day. We enjoy shopping, beaches, swimming pools and relaxing. We overnight in Mombasa. (B,L,D)

Day 10 : Nairobi, Africa

July 14, 2027 (Wednesday)

Today we spend our last day in Mombasa relaxing on the beach or shopping. We board a train and head back to Nairobi. There is much more to see here. We go to the Karen Blixen Museum, home of the author of "Out of Africa." We visit the Giraffe Center and the Elephant Orphanage. We have time for shopping as well. Overnight in Nairobi.(B,L,D)

Day 11 : Nairobi/Fly Home

July 15, 2027 (Thursday)

Today we bid farewell to our beloved Kenya. We are taken to the airport where we catch our flights home.

Arrive home.

Headliners

New
John was born and raised in Salt Lake City, and he served his mission in the Philippines. Following his mission he attended the University of Utah, and later graduated from BYU. John is the co-host of the Follow Him podcast with Hank Smith. John has taught the Book of Mormon and the New Testament at Brigham Young University, and the BYU Salt Lake Center since 1996. In 2003, he earned a Master’s Degree in Religious Education. He is the author of more than two dozen books and CDs many of which, he says, are effective non-prescription sleep-aids. He loves to golf, write, read, and play the banjo and guitar. John is a founding member of the local chapter of the Andy Griffith Show Re-run Watchers Club, and does a spot-on impersonation of Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife. John has served as a bishop, and was recently released as a member of the Young Men’s General Advisory Council (formerly known as the General Board). John and Kim’s children have served missions in France, Iceland, Tahiti and West Virginia, and another son is currently serving in Uruguay.
